Choosing the Right Type of Snowmobile

Trail Snowmobiles

If you have zero to little experience with snowmobiles, a trail snowmobile is a great entry-level option. As the name suggests, this type of snowmobile is best suited on maintained paths and groomed trails. They tend to feature user-friendly controls and are on the lower end of the price spectrum which makes them perfect for beginners. That doesn’t mean snowmobile veterans can’t have fun riding them as well. They’re usually designed with lighter frames so they are easy to maneuver and have surprisingly quick acceleration times. Just make sure you don’t take them on rough terrain or deep snow.

Mountain Snowmobiles

Quite the opposite from trail category, you want to stay away from mountain snowmobiles until you’ve refined your skills on a snowmobile and are comfortable with heights. The body style on mountain snowmobiles are narrow and long, and they have specialized tracks so that they are able to get through thick snow at higher elevations. And most important of all, they have some of the strongest engines to be able to get up the mountains which means you have to be even more careful.

Crossover Snowmobiles

The nice thing about snowmobiles, is their categories are pretty telling about what purpose they serve. We have trail snowmobiles best suited for trails, mountain snowmobiles to take on mountains, and now we have crossover models which are crossovers of the previously mentioned types. When you want a diverse snowmobile which offers the handling and traction of a trail model, but with longer tracks and stronger engines to dominate deep powder, a crossover option is perfect. Similar to the mountain type, you will just want to make sure you’re comfortable with both types of terrains before going all out on a crossover snowmobile.
